Committee Meeting

The MKNA Land Use Committee exists to assist property owners in the navigation of the City of Indianapolis development process while maintaining the quality and consistency of architecture in Meridian-Kessler. The Land Use Committee consists of MK residents and business owners with expertise in various areas included building and landscape architecture, law, etc.

Prior to a property variance – both residential and/or commercial – being heard by the City of Indianapolis Board of Zoning Appeal (BZA), homeowners will have their petition reviewed by the Land Use Committee. The review of the project gives the committee and neighboring property owners the opportunity to view plans and ask questions. When reviewing plans, the Committee references the current MKNA Land Use Plan to stay consistent in its recommendations.

The MKNA Land Use Committee encourages builders, architects, homeowners, etc. to come to the Land Use Committee prior to applying for a variance with the City of Indianapolis in order to keep project timelines on time; i.e. once a variance is filed with the City of Indianapolis, a hearing date is set. If a MKNA Land Use Committee meeting is not scheduled prior to the hearing a date, a continuance will be filed to the next month.

Land Use Committee meetings are open to the public and hosted on the first Monday of each month at The National located at 215 E. 38th Street at 6:30 PM. This month’s meeting will be hosted at MKNA’s offices located 3965 N. Meridian Street (40th North Condominiums). A short summary of this month’s petitions for review can be found below:
  • Petition: 2018 DV3-054
  • Address: 5652 Central Avenue
  • Petitioner: Joseph and Karen Leone by Mandy Faux-Smith
The Petitioner is requesting a variance of development standards of the Consolidated Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance for a four-foot four-inch  side setback for a proposed garage expansion (seven-foot  side setback required).  The petitioner will be constructing 32-feet further along the existing non-conforming setback. The requested setback will line up with the existing home.
  • Petition: 2018-DV3-051
  • Address: 4335 North Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Petitioner: Prem Konalonla by Mark A Vickery
The Petitioner is requesting a variance of development standards of the Consolidated Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance for a four-foot north side setback for a proposed garage expansion (seven-foot north side setback required).
UPDATE: The MKNA Land Use Committee has recommended that both petitions be recommended for approval at their upcoming BZA hearing dates. All neighbors within proximity to either project can locate information about each petition above or by calling the number listed on the orange Public Hearing sign located in the homeowners yard.
