UPDATE: Revised Plans for Christmas tree disposal
DPW RESTORES CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION AT EIGHT INDY PARKS LOCATIONS IN JANUARY
In response to feedback from residents across Marion County, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) today announced that it will restore its live Christmas tree collection program at Indy Parks locations during the month of January, beginning immediately and ending January 31.
In December, DPW announced it would try a new approach to live Christmas tree disposal in 2015—one that let residents leave their trees at the curb for regular or heavy trash pick-up. The change aimed to increase convenience for residents and discourage illegal dumping in Indy Parks year around. However, DPW heard from residents and neighborhood groups expressing disappointment and disapproval that the program would not continue in 2015.
Once again, live Christmas trees may be left at any of the following Indy Parks sites:
- Broad Ripple Park, 1610 Broad Ripple Ave., South lot
- Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair Street, Main parking lot
- Garfield Park, 2432 Conservatory Drive, MacAllister Center
- Krannert Park, 605 S. High School Road, North parking lot
- Perry Park, 451 Stop 11 Road, South west side of parking lot near pool
- Riverside Park, 2420 N. Riverside Drive, Tennis court parking lot
- Sahm Park, 6801 E. 91st Street, Soccer field parking lot
- Northwestway Park, 5253 W. 62nd Street, Near the recycling bins
Christmas trees left at Indy Parks will be chipped or mulched for future use.
Marion county residents may still dispose of their live Christmas trees at the curb on their regular or heavy trash pick-up days.
- Heavy Trash Disposal– Remove all decorations and lights and leave the tree whole at the curb. Each live Christmas tree counts as a single heavy trash item.
- Weekly Regular Trash Disposal– Remove all decorations and lights. Cut and bundle tree into 3 ft. to 4 ft. sections. In cart areas, residents may leave live trees in addition to up to two full carts. In hand collection areas, residents may leave trees as well as up to 10 kitchen-size trash bags.

Indianapolis residents who have gotten used to dropping off their Christmas tree at a city park to be mulched will have to adjust to a new disposal plan in 2015.
In response to the new rules, local green advocate Renee Sweany is launching her own Christmas tree collection program.
From Jan. 2 to Jan. 11, people will be able to drop off real Christmas trees in a designated area of Teachers’ Treasures parking lot, 1800 E. 10th St.
