American Express started Small Business Saturday as a hyper-focused effort to support small, locally owned businesses across the country in 2010. With a successful first year, the Senate unanimously agreed to support a resolution for Small Business Saturday to fall on the Saturday following Black Friday each year. According to American Express, an estimated total of $85 billion have been spent on Small Business Saturday since its inception.
